DAAD In-Country/In-Region Scholarship Programme: Invest in Your Future and Sub-Saharan Africa's Development

Empowering Future Leaders in Higher Education:

This DAAD scholarship programme aims to strengthen higher education systems across Sub-Saharan Africa. It grants funding for Master's and PhD studies in development-related fields to individuals who plan to become academics or researchers at Sub-Saharan African universities.

Building a Brighter Future:

By supporting future academic and professional leaders, the programme contributes to:

  • Solving development challenges: Graduates will have the skills needed to tackle critical issues in Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Strengthening education and research: Graduates will contribute to a more robust academic landscape.
  • Enhancing partner institutions: The programme fosters collaboration and knowledge sharing between universities.

Programme Goals:

  • Equipping graduates for leadership roles (Programme Objective 1)
  • Promoting gender and social inclusion (Programme Objective 2)
  • Empowering partner institutions (Programme Objective 3)

Who is Eligible?

  • Graduates and postgraduates from Sub-Saharan Africa with a relevant degree.
  • Applicants pursuing Master's or PhD degrees in their home country (In-Country) or another Sub-Saharan African country (In-Region).
  • Female applicants and those from underprivileged groups are strongly encouraged to apply.

Please note: South African In-Country applications are managed by the NRF (https://www.nrf.ac.za/).

What's Funded?

  • Master's and PhD studies
  • Tuition fees
  • Monthly allowance
  • Study and research allowance
  • Printing allowance
  • (In-Region only) Travel allowance and health insurance

Selection Process:

The selection process varies by program. Please see the relevant call for applications for details.

  • Malawi: Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) - Master's in Aquaculture and Fisheries Science
  • Namibia: Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) - PhD in Computer Science
  • South Africa (In-Region only):
    • Stellenbosch University (SUN) - Master's in Molecular Biology and Human Genetics (MBHG)
    • University of Cape Town (UCT) - Master's in Urban Studies – Southern Urbanism
    • University of the Western Cape (UWC) - Master's in Development Studies at ISD, PhD in Development Studies at ISD
