DAAD In-Country/In-Region Scholarship Programme: Invest in Your Future and Sub-Saharan Africa's Development

Empowering Future Leaders in Higher Education:

This DAAD scholarship programme aims to strengthen higher education systems across Sub-Saharan Africa. It grants funding for Master's and PhD studies in development-related fields to individuals who plan to become academics or researchers at Sub-Saharan African universities.

Building a Brighter Future:

By supporting future academic and professional leaders, the programme contributes to:

  • Solving development challenges: Graduates will have the skills needed to tackle critical issues in Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Strengthening education and research: Graduates will contribute to a more robust academic landscape.
  • Enhancing partner institutions: The programme fosters collaboration and knowledge sharing between universities.

Programme Goals:

  • Equipping graduates for leadership roles (Programme Objective 1)
  • Promoting gender and social inclusion (Programme Objective 2)
  • Empowering partner institutions (Programme Objective 3)

Who is Eligible?

  • Graduates and postgraduates from Sub-Saharan Africa with a relevant degree.
  • Applicants pursuing Master's or PhD degrees in their home country (In-Country) or another Sub-Saharan African country (In-Region).
  • Female applicants and those from underprivileged groups are strongly encouraged to apply.

Please note: South African In-Country applications are managed by the NRF (https://www.nrf.ac.za/).

COMMONWEALTH DISTANCE LEARNING MASTERS SCHOLARSHIPS 2024/2025 FOR DEVELOPING COMMONWEALTH COUNTRIES

Apply now for the 2024/2025 Commonwealth Distance Learning Masters Scholarships. This program, offered by the Commonwealth Scholarships Commission, is designed to provide opportunities for individuals from Commonwealth countries to pursue Master’s degrees remotely.

About the Program:

The Commonwealth Distance Learning program, one of the initiatives under the Commonwealth Scholarships Commission, aims to support individuals in acquiring skills vital for sustainable development, which might not be accessible in their home countries.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • To qualify for the Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholarship, applicants must: 
  • Be a citizen of or have refugee status in an eligible Commonwealth country or be a British Protected Person.
  • Be a permanent resident in a developing Commonwealth country.
  • Hold a first degree of at least upper second class (2:1) standard. Exceptions may be made based on relevant experience.
  • Demonstrate financial need.

Benefits:

The scholarship covers tuition fees and study grants, excluding concurrent scholarships, awards, or bursaries.

Selection Process:

Each UK university participating in the program will conduct its own recruitment process. Selected applicants will be forwarded to the CSC by early May 2024 for confirmation of eligibility. Results will be communicated to applicants by July 2024.

Selection Criteria:

Criteria include academic merit and potential impact on the applicant’s home country’s development.

Choosing a University/Course:

Explore eligible courses for 2024 on the CSC website, categorized by development theme. Utilize resources like Study UK, Postgrad.com, and UCAS Postgraduate for research.

How to Apply:

Applications for the 2024/25 academic year are open until 28 March 2024, 16:00 GMT. Apply through the CSC’s online application system. Ensure admission to an approved Master’s course at a participating UK university.

STANFORD AFRICAN SCHOLARS IN GLOBAL HEALTH PROGRAM

The Stanford African Scholars in Global Health Program is currently accepting applications. Mid-career, licensed African physicians working within academic institutions in Africa are encouraged to apply. The program, hosted by the Stanford Center for Innovation in Global Health, aims to enhance health outcomes through the acquisition and application of new skill sets.
Selected fellows will spend six weeks at Stanford during the 2024-25 academic year, engaging in bidirectional learning and equitable partnerships. Cohort 1 will be at Stanford from January to February 2025, while Cohort 2 will attend from April to May 2025.

Requirements: 

Physicians from all specialties and primary care backgrounds are eligible.
Priority is given to applicants from Sub-Saharan Africa with interests in antimicrobial resistance, oncology, vaccine uptake, or inflammatory diseases.
Successful candidates will identify a specific skill they wish to develop to address a health need at their institution and secure the support of a Stanford faculty mentor.

Eligibility Criteria: 

Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to improving health outcomes in their home countries.
They must be African citizens residing, teaching, and practicing clinically in an African country.
Applicants should hold a board certification in medicine (MD, MBChB, or MMed) and have 3 to 15 years of faculty experience.
Proficiency in written and spoken English is required.

Benefits:

Fellows will be appointed as Visiting Instructors at Stanford and can earn Continuing Medical Education credit.
Upon completion, fellows will receive a Pfizer grant of up to $50,000 and mentorship for 12-18 months to implement a clinical improvement project at their home institution.
The fellowship will conclude with a presentation at a convening in an African country.

Application Process:

Step 1: The initial screening application, open from February 5th to February 25, 2024, requires applicants to propose a Stanford mentor, identify a critical need at their home institution, and explain how Stanford will support their career goals. 
Step 2: Selected applicants will submit a detailed proposal by April 21, 2024, including an implementation plan and letters of support. Finalists may undergo Zoom interviews before final selections are made.
